Chennai, 1 February 2012

For immediate release

WAN-IFRA Appoints Representative in Bangladesh

To take WAN-IFRA services closer to publishers in the country

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has appointed Drik Picture Library Ltd., the leading picture and news agency of Bangladesh, as its representative in the country, in a move to bring WAN-IFRA’s services closer to local publishers.

As each country in the Indian sub-continent displays unique characteristics and challenges, the representation will help to address the specific needs of Bangladesh’s publishers and will include local media events and training.

“‘We are very happy to appoint Drik Picture Library as our representative in Bangladesh,” said Magdoom Mohamed, Managing Director of WAN-IFRA South Asia. “Our relations with Dr. Shahidul Alam, Managing Director of Drik Picture Library, goes back to more than 8 years and we share some common ideas of what needs to be done to help improve the media industry in Bangladesh. We are confident that this relation will go a long way, and, with Drik’s respected position in the country, it will enable seamless rendering of all WAN-IFRA services to the publishers in the country.”

Dr. Shahidul Alam said: “Drik has found a natural partner in WAN-IFRA, as both are trade organizations with a human right’s mandate. The Newspapers in Education programme is also an area where the mutual interest in media and education of both organisations provide synergy. Drik’s pioneering role in new media and ICT creates a clear path for the partnership to utilise the dynamism in Asian media and propel it to new heights.”

WAN-IFRA already has a publisher member in Bangladesh, The Independent daily newspaper.

This year, WAN-IFRA will organise its twentieth annual South Asian Conference, WAN-IFRA India 2012, on September 26 and 27 at Pune, India. The conference will address the challenges and opportunities for news publishers in the region and provide a direction into the future of the news publishing industry in the region.

WAN-IFRA South Asia, based in Chennai, India, manages services offered to the members and publishers in the South Asian region.

Drik calendar 2012 now available:

Farmers harvest a bumper crop of Jute in Bogra district due to favourable weather and timely rain.
A moment of crisis, a celebration, the unexpected, a dream realized, hidden truths, a reaffirmation of what we knew. Through TV screens, newspaper pages, giant electronic screens and tiny handsets, we gather, sift, scroll and parse news unfolding. Through twitter feeds, facebook and blogs, we circulate the news that we are fed, to inform, alert and mobilise those around us. Occasionally we question. The news photograph brings down powerful autocrats, highlights the plight of a single child, shines a spotlight on communities in strife, ignites the passion of victory, shares the tragedy of loss.

Villagers of Choto Gunorgati live in fear of river erosion and have shifted house three or four times to makeshift housing in crowded and unsanitary conditions. It is estimated that 100,000 families have become homeless in northern district of Bangladesh.
But the manufacture of consent has rarely been more engineered. With everything from wars to presidential campaigns being stage-managed and with mainstream news increasingly fed by official sources, reliance on usual sources of news images has become increasingly dangerous.

Police arrest an investor following violent demonstrations outside the Dhaka Stock Exchange.
Majority world countries suffer particularly from stereotypical representations, and with media-mergers creating ever more powerful organisations, with tentacles that touch every aspect of our lives, our ‘knowledge’ of the world becomes increasingly more dominated by a few players. The need for news sources to be diverse and varied was never more urgent. With Getty and Corbis controlling the stock photo market, and Reuters, AP, AFP and EPA dominating the wires, massaging the truth is a norm that infiltrates our consciousness. The barriers between news and entertainment becomes increasingly blurred. Advertorials, product placements, well planted press releases package marketing hype through the Trojan horse of sponsored sound-bites and gritty footage masquerading as news.

Police and mega-alliance blockaders clashed at different places in the capital, leaving 20 people injured. Police fired at least 50 rounds of tear gas and arrested 15 people. Four large homemade bombs were thrown. The 72-hour blockade was called by the Awami League and its allies to demand the postponing of elections and reconstitute the caretaker government. Dhaka, Bangladesh, January 1, 2007. © Munem Wasif/DrikNEWS

Popular uprisings orchestrated through selected and sometimes fictional ‘news feeds’ are used to justify invasions, occupation and the murder and demonization of leaders who have outlived their usefulness. Propaganda in the guise of news, calls for selective applications of the Geneva Convention and international laws. Murder is justified, genocide glossed over. News channels hailed as the champions of the underdogs, know when to change their tune , towing the party line.

A fire started allegedly by an arsonist following a personal dispute destroys 75 shanties in the Lalmati Bihari slum in Mirpur. No casualties or wounded were reported yet it took almost three hours for the Mirpur firefighters to get the fire under control. Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The majority world has traditionally been represented by white, middle class, western photographers. But having local photographers is not sufficient in itself. As long as editorial control remains in the North, stories will continue to have a northern slant. As long as major corporations own the media, reporting will always serve the interests of the wealthy. The only way this can be challenged is through alternative sources being formed that are independent of western and corporate media. Lean, efficient, fluid media entities that can outmaneuver the media giants, creating fissures in smooth storytelling of the mega media machinery, allowing a different truth to emerge through the cracks.

Candles flicker at a church as Christians observe All Souls’ Day on the 2nd of November.
DrikNEWS is such a guerilla resistance against media occupation. The agency, an independent body of Drik Picture Library uses the powerful mix of new technology and grassroots reporting, to challenge established media, especially through citizen journalism and rural reporting. Through professionals immersed in their communities, and unhindered by the strings of corporate control, it tells stories that go against the grain. Combining powerful tools available through new technologies, linked with an extensive network of passionate reporters, the pioneers of digital technology in Bangladesh have combined the global reach of new media, with the local sensitivity of rural journalists nurtured by their communities. This is news for the people told the way only the people can tell.

Twenty-one-year-old Shankar Sarkar is both perturbed and fascinated by the surroundings he grew up in – a red light area in the city. Shankar’s discomfort resulted in him dropping out of school but his enchantment led him to click a series of photographs of his mother, eventually enabling him to find a niche for himself in professional photography.

On the occasion of Children’s Day, a three-day exhibition of photographs taken by two children from the margins was inaugurated here on Monday.

“From the first time that I held a camera in my hand (a compact Yashica film camera that had to be shared by six boys from the slum), I have been taking pictures of my mother – scenes from her daily life,” says Shankar, adding that in this manner he has been “documenting” her life over the last ten years.

He says he would love to take pictures of others in the neighbourhood – he has known them for years. But when he steps out with his camera, “it invariably leads to a fight”. Sometimes he visits other red light areas in the city, for instance Sonagachi.

“They do not know me there, so I’m not interrupted, but the photographs can never be as candid as at home,” he says. Some of these photographs of his mother titled “facing one’s own” were shown at the Delhi Photo Festival last year.

Circumstances forced Firoza Khatoon to drop out of school and work as a domestic help. Five years ago she was introduced to photography during a nine-week workshop organised by an NGO, Save the Children. Her talent and enthusiasm were spotted and she was offered a chance to hone her skills at a leading photography agency in the city.

She was introduced to Henri Cartier Bresson, the master of candid photographs and a pioneer of street photography, and computers and Photoshop. Firoza, who was re-admitted to school and is presently studying in Class XI, wants to pursue her passion and become a professional photographer one day. “I may become a photographer for a newspaper or work in an agency; I just know I want to become a photographer,” she says.

Shankar is already working at an agency – he manages the photographic library, retouches pictures on Photoshop and is now learning graphic design at Drik India.

A nine-month internship in Bangladesh allowed him to save enough to buy his own professional camera. “I had to scrounge a bit, but I managed the Rs. 60,000 for my Nikon D 90,” he beams.
—————-

Shankar Sarkar worked at Drik in Dhaka under the Fredskorpset exchange programme.

To trust or distrust some one is a matter of whimsy for her like others pavements dwellers. 2008, Kamalapur Railway Station, Dhaka, Bangladesh.
UDDIN: I’m a freelance photographer in Bangladesh and I first met Shahidul in 1998. At that time I was in my hometown in Khulna. Shahidul, who also moved to Bangladesh a few years earlier was organizing all the photographers here. So it was a great moment for me to meet him.

After that, I came to Dhaka in 1990 and I joined a newspaper here. In 2005 I decided that work in the newspaper was not right for me, and I had the opportunity to join Drik and work directly with Shahidul. So I took the opportunity and worked there as a photographer. It was really a milestone, and a breakthrough for me.

ALAM: The agency [Drik] was set up primarily because we were very concerned that countries like Bangladesh, which some have called “third-world countries” and we choose to call “majority-world countries,” have been portrayed almost invariably through a very narrow lens. It worries me that Bangladesh has become in the eyes of many, an icon of poverty. The reality is something we cannot ignore. Shehab shows it through his work and I have no intention of wallpapering over the problems we have. What I do have a serious problem with is when people are denied their humanity and become icons of poverty; they become lesser human beings.

The agency was set up because we wanted to tell stories that got across the richness and the diversity of people’s lives and we realized the story had to be told by people who had empathy for the subject. So it was a platform for local practitioners. And that’s the birth of Drik. But when we started, we realized that a lot of the photography infrastructure a Western agency has acess to, was not available to us. So we started creating some of that infrastructure here. Later on we also began developing educational structures that could foster new talents. We are one of the few agencies in the world that has two galleries of its own, runs a school of photography, and runs its own photography festival; I do not know of a single other agency in the world that does anything of this type. But all of that is really part and parcel of Drik’s photography-philosophy–in telling rich and diverse stories without compromising the subject’s humanity–we just had to create a whole space for ourselves. And now we are telling our own stories.

UDDIN: I want to know how you feel about my work and my representations as an indigenous photographer from a majority-world. In other words, what is your general feeling about my work?

ALAM: When I look at the work you’ve done for the Magnum Foundation there are two things that strike me: you have entered people’s personal space at a very direct level. Physically, you’re extremely close; yet you’ve managed to be able to avoid having a threatening, imposing, or certainly dominating influence upon that space and that’s a very tricky balance to keep. We need to be able to get close enough to smell what’s happening; we need to be able to feel the tension and the energy; yet, at the same time, we need to be able to give breathing space. I think that combination is a difficult one to acquire and you’ve done it not merely because you’re technically very proficient but also because as a human being you’ve been able to give that space and that dignity, and I find that very, very impressive.

UDDIN: Well I think I want to let you know how I actually progressed to that, and how I got access to these people’s lives and gained their trust. When I started, this project was actually commissioned by Drik and Concern Worldwide. At that time the project target was simply to raise some money for them, and Concern World Wide wanted to start a project about the pavement dwellers to improve their lives. I published a book and used the money generated with additional support from Concern to build an eleven-day-stay shelter for the pregnant dwellers in Dhaka and now they are starting to use it as a night shelter.

And now when they use the day shelter or the medical facility and actually save money, they then feel: “okay, these guys actually are not outsiders. These guys a part of us, fighting for us, and thinking about us.” I think that helped me a lot to breakdown the barrier. And this time, I had some family friends over there. Some of the families I personally knew would depend on me, not in terms of money, but would occasionally ask me to help make an important decisions and give advice. For example, if a family friend had a medical problem, from time to time I would visit them, discussing their illness, talk to the doctors for them, follow up, and so on. This process helped me to actually be there.

We used these images in Chobi Mela, and I think it already has had an impact on Bangladesh. But still there are a lot of people coming to Dhaka everyday and the space for them is shrinking day by day. Last year I photographed in a place called Kamalapur Station where around 500 pavement dwellers lived. But now the authorities have prohibited them [the pavement dwellers] from sleeping and dwelling here. People keep coming to Dhaka because they believe they really will have a better life. Most of the time people outside of Dhaka are paid around two dollars or less per day. In Dhaka, if they collect waste for example, they can earn up to three to four dollars a day. They hope to make a better life for themselves in Dhaka because they’re more opportunities here. Unfortunately, I find that most of them do not actually make it.

So still I’m thinking, how can we photographers help change the situation, because photographers don’t directly do anything. We just raise awareness. And I want to the raise awareness, but I’m wondering how much we can actually do with that.

ALAM: Well, one of the things you tried to do–even though we were unsuccessful–was to hold the show in the tunnel in Karwan Bazaar between the two pavements where they actually live. Of course this was an extension of something we’ve been doing every couple of years where we’ve taken the work to the people, particularly people who will never come to a gallery space, as opposed to only showing work in high profile galleries. And while you were unsuccessful in this particular situation because the bureaucracy, the fact that you wanted that sort of engagement will give you the answer in the future. Rather than you telling their story, you’ve become part of the community collectively telling the story together. It becomes much more powerful. Often, of course, we are messengers; we are witnesses. But I think you’ve been able to immerse yourself within this group and become part the community. Therefore, the story that you are telling is a story from within. And I find that a very important space to be talking from.

But I think you have another role; we are very privileged to be able to step back, step out, and in way distance ourselves when it’s convenient. If we see it not as a convenience, but as a responsibility, we can then become ambassadors for that community. I think you’ve already talked about how the book has raised money and things like that, but I actually think the monetary side of it is a relatively small part of it. Why your work is important is because it has provided dignity in terms of how poor people are portrayed. Your pictures show them as human beings in a different situation. You have kids playing, you have children being born, and of course you have very difficult situations as well. But at the end you’ve got faces that freshens a whole lot of situations and remind us that they are all part of the human life. You have not shown these people as the exotic and I find that very important. That’s important because photographers go to far away places, they’ve got to photograph obscure things in order to come up with a story. That fact that these stories exist in our backyard is an important realization. Photography, at least the type of photography you are talking about, is more about human relationships than about the mechanics of situation. I think it’s a very important observation and you have made those observations.

Now is the time for you to use the other skills you have as a teacher, as an activist, as a well-established and respected member within the community and take this work further. I’m curating several shows in other places where I’ve been interested in having this work instituted. But I’ve also been talking with some publishers about getting your work published in mainstream and high-quality books so that it’s circulated worldwide. You will know, I’ve also nominated you for the Singapore Signature Awards, so those will hopefully open doors for you. But I think you will open doors for other people, so you need to see yourself as a window to their lives. And provided that you can be their conduit, you’re halfway there.

UDDIN: Most of the pavement dwellers are here in Dhaka. The men for most part do transportation work; they work as laborers on loading trucks or in a railway station; some of them are rickshaw pullers. The women [for the most part] are maid-servants and some of them work as a sex-workers or recycle and waste collectors. Most of the children work collecting and selling waste.

They come from villages to Dhaka because they think that’s the best way to improve their living. Some of them leave because of climate difficulty, some because of poverty, and some because of loans. A number of poor people in Dhaka come to find better work and a better way of living. And in my story that I describe, I was also drawn to Dhaka like them. I think when I came to Dhaka, it was great opportunity to explore myself and somehow I managed to do it.

Now there are 20,000 pavement dwellers living in Dhaka which is a small number compared to the total population. But day by day their numbers are increasing and within a few day it will increase to the same rate as other populations are coming to Dhaka. Another problem is that the privileged people in society really look down at them [pavement dwellers] in a narrow way. People need minimum requirements from life, like food, shelter, security, and health. But these people get nothing. They even think of nothing like that; they only think for today. They think I’m I going to have food, shelter, and some clothes today? They do not even know or want to know politics or economics. Nothing. They only want a place to sleep, food to eat, and clothes to wear, that’s all. But they are human just like us. So privileged members of society, like us need to do something for them. We need to actually raise their standards of living. During the last three years when I was working with them, I found out while they are poor, they have love and affection; they have their family lives; and they’re really not so different from us.

Sometimes I find that they are actually much more open-minded than us. They can easily adapt, I should say, adapt to people like us, who are really strangers and not a part of the community. They welcomed me; they spoke to me like family members, and I was not only with them for one day. Sometimes I’ll live with them for two to three days, and they do not feel that I’m an outsider living with them. So that was really striking for me.

There is a family I know that I followed from the villages. The woman’s name is Rosina and she collects waste; the man was working as a rickshaw puller; and they have three children. Earlier they did not think about their children’s future, and let their children do what they wanted to. But when I spoke with them, I said no, they should think about sending them to school and they eventually sent them to school.

ALAM: I actually see Drik and Shehab as part of the same social movement, the goal being social justice, and striving for social justice. We took on photography because it is such a powerful tool in this process. So for me, it’s not about photography, but about what photography is able to achieve. And while I’m very proud of what Shehab has done, I will be quick to point out that Shehab is not the only one. There is a whole string of very fine young photographers, who are working out there today, that have come out of this space giving us challenging work; they are pushing the boundaries. They are very fine photographers and very fine people and I find it difficult to separate the two

————-

Shahidul Alam is a photographer, writer, and activist working in the Dhaka city area. Alam studied at the London University and returned to his native city, Dhaka, in 1984. In 1989 he founded The Drik Picture Library and throughout the last two decades has actively developed and shaped the institution. His own work has been shown internationally, including MOMA in New York, George Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Tehran. He is currently director of Drik Picture Library.

The Drik Picture Library was founded in 1989 by Shahidul Alam with the intention of providing a platform for local photographers in what they call the “majority world.” The institution has since expanded, adding Pathshala, a new media academy and Chobi Mela, the first photography festival in Asia, to its repertoire. The Drik Picture Library continues to develop young talent, promote citizen’s journalism, and foster a unique vision for photojournalism and new media for the Global South.

Concern Worldwide is an international organization that works with the “world’s poorest people to transform their lives.” In 2008, Shehab Uddin teamed with Concern Worldwide to photograph Dhaka’s poorest population, the pavement dwellers. The Amrao Manush project roughly translates to “we are people too,” reminding the viewers that extreme poverty never eliminates humanity. Concern Worldwide has expanded to other areas in Bangladesh continuing their work on health, education, and HIV/AIDS awareness.

He was the quiet one amongst us. The shadow that accentuated the highlight. In an organization known for its creativity and exuberance, Mujibor was the unsung worker. He swept the floor, lugged things around and was the one everyone called upon when things got bad. Looking for a picture of him, I realized he wasn’t even listed in the Drik Family Profile section. He never got mentioned in the acknowledgements, except for a general thank you to ‘all the others who helped’. I could find no photograph of Mujibor, except for the one I took when he died.

Probably at a Drik picnic.

His is the typical story of the rural poor. With little education and no special skills, making a living had become difficult. His brother Moti, and cousin Delower who work at Pathshala and Drik, introduced him to us. A low paid job in the city was better than being out of work in the village. Drik also provided opportunities to learn. Mujibor needed to send money home, so sharing a mess with colleagues was the cheapest way to live. Skimping on food, another way to save more for the children’s education. Not a wise decision when one is in poor health, but Mujibor had little choice. The extra food allowance we provided was also sent home rather than spent on meals.

When he was diagnosed with TB, my sister Najma arranged for his treatment. But the treatment for poverty is more complex and needs long-term solutions. Over a third of TB cases in Bangladesh go undetected. Many of us who might be infected by TB face none of the consequences. A decent regular meal is often enough to keep the disease at bay. For many however, a decent regular meal is a tall order. With spiraling costs of food, and high house rents, sending money home, is often at the cost of one’s longevity. A trade off that many accept as given. Mujibor was 40ish. Not many people in Bangladesh know their exact age. Few have birth certificates. His life was unexceptional, his pay was unexceptional, his death was unexceptional. Once one accepts the reality of poverty. It is that acceptance, that the have-nots have to accept such lives and such deaths, that is exceptional.

Mujibor’s salary was considerably more than the minimum wage stipulated by the government. Yet he struggled to support his three children and wife, all of whom lived in the village, where costs were lower. He lived alone in the city.

I remember a migrant worker in Paris telling me. “I live and work here, and send money home. Perhaps my sister will get married, perhaps we might even buy a plot of land, but the best years of my life are spent in loneliness and misery. Who will give me back my youth?”

The inequalities between and within nations are propped up by systems which worship profit above all else. The buyers squeeze the sellers squeeze the suppliers choke the workers. A much more famous Mujibor*** had spoken of a golden Bengal (Bangladesh). That Mujibor’s followers will need to do more than name monuments after him and pursue insane acts of vengeance, for the gold to reach this Mujibor’s children.

Muhammad Al Bouazizi, a 26 year old fruit seller, set himself alight in Tunisia in protest. Mujibor’s protest was more muted. He suddenly fell ill and was bleeding from his mouth and rectum. He was immediately taken to hospital. We all rushed to his side. The doctor recognised me. He said he would take special care. He suspected lung cancer and that little time was left. We were devastated. He was transferred to Intensive Care. The family was called in from the village.

As I stroked his forehead as he lay with tubes stuck to him, I saw the taut muscular body, the kind all workers have. Like Sultan’s** paintings. He wanted water, but the nurses said it was dangerous. I was only able to convince them to wet his lips. He was parched and wanted more. We said goodbye. I used words, he spoke with his eyes.

It had been just over 36 hours when, a bit after midnight, the doctor talked of putting him on life support. We hadn’t told Mujibor, but the man knew he was dying. His gentle smile had long gone. When his brother arrived at around 1:30 in the morning, he simply said “I’m leaving. Look after the children.” At 03:10 he had.

Mujibor and Bouzazi both died of a disease called poverty. Will the rage in Middle East and African nations spread to the rest of the world? They will say we are different, we have regular elections and a democratic system. Mujibor’s wife and children and millions of inhabitants of Golden Bengal might disagree.

*“ekti mujoborer theke lokkho mujiborer kontho” famous song sung during the liberation war, ‘from the voice of one Mujib will rise a thousand other Mujib’s voices’

** S M Sultan, Bangladeshi painter known for the muscular men and women he depicted in his paintings of rural Bangladsh.

***Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (popularly known as Bongobondhu, friend of Bengal), who is acknowledged as the founder of the nation.

From the Exhibition Dhaka My Dreams, My Reality by Debashish Shom

To Debasish Shom, photography is the interpretation of a state of mind. He believes the physiological and emotional thoughts of the mind influence images greatly, and photographs act as a medium to unravel and express these thoughts.

A Bangladeshi photographer, Debasish Shom is a graduate from Pathshala South Asian Media Academy. Since childhood, Shom has always felt the need for a medium to aptly convey his emotions. When he graduated from university, he began taking interest in pictures and got admitted to Pathshala. Unlike many who have grown up with photographs, Shom’s first exposure of the art came through the institution.

Debashish Shom second from left at the special opening of four exhibitions at Drik 0n 23 January 2001. With him are (from Left to right) artist David de Souza, Chief Guest Kushi Kabir, Festival Director Shahidul Alam and artist Munem Wasif. Photograph Chulie de Silva

Soon, photographs and stories were beginning to take shape. His exhibition at Chobi Mela VI, “Dhaka: My Dreams, My Reality” at the Drik Open Air Gallery is on till 3 February 2011. It embodies the psychosomatic war between his dreams and reality. He portrays how a person under the influence of drugs perceives his space in the bustling city of the rat race. There is a sense of isolation, illusion, depression and emptiness everywhere that largely contradicts what one knows Dhaka city to be.

“When I photograph, I always try to redefine my space. What is seen and experienced is reconstructed and a contradiction created. That is how I feel I am most involved with space and matter.”

From the exhibition Dhaka My Dreams, My Reality by Debashish Shom

The exhibit encapsulates complex struggles into simple photographs that strike the viewers almost instantaneously. They are powerful and potent, providing an indiscreet insight into undiscovered realities. To interpret the mind’s transition and turmoil is exciting and difficult at the same time, and Shom has rather effortlessly captured it in his frames.

Shom has held exhibitions at Drik Gallery Bangladesh and Kiyosato Museum of Arts in Japan. His work was also showcased in Chobi Mela IV. As a successful artist, would Shom recommend a career in photography to others?

“If someone is passionate, I believe a career can be built through photography. There is a lot of opportunity in commercial photography that can be approached alongside documentary photography. I only speak from my experiences, and I still believe I can make it as a photographer. However, it is important rethink carefully before making up one’s mind in this field. There is a lot of hard work involved.”

With the rampant growth of digital technology, the field of photography has become increasingly competitive over the past few years. There are more people taking pictures now.

“I think it’s great so many people are taking pictures. It makes them value pictures. Photographs then become significant in their lives and they can appreciate the art better.”

Debasish Shom currently works for CANVAS – a fashion and lifestyle magazine.
